Once it was broken there was no hope that they could revert back to their government. they became savages who was ruled only by one person and everyone else was under him. The glasses represented protection from the monster and the wild animals because they could make fire with them. They gave people a hope that people would come an save them from the island. It gave them a way to cook meat so that they could eat it. Once the glasses were stolen the power of fine was taken away. Destroying any hope of being rescued having cooked food and being protected.
